What is chiropractic and how can it help in pregnancy?

What is chiropractic and how can it help in pregnancy?

What is this thing called chiropractic?
We all know you’ve seen those TikTok videos of all that cracking stuff. Chiropractic care is an allied health profession which is used to treat all your aches and pains, in whatever part of the body. We don’t just specifically look at the back, much to contrary belief.

What does a consultation look like?

An initial consultation will consist of taking a detailed history to get a background on the injury and to find out more about you and how your aches and pains are affecting you. From there we would conduct a physical examination. This is seen through through a detailed movement screen and looking at your movement patterns. Piecing this together and conducting muscle tests and assessments to determine the root cause of why you are experiencing your pain. Don’t be fooled when we look at you holistically rather than just concentrating on where you are feeling your pain. Once we’ve gotten down to the nitty gritty of what is going on we provide treatment.

We use a variety of different methods and treatment strategies from specific soft tissue releases, dry needling, taping and a heavy emphasis on exercise rehabilitation.

Why is exercise such an integral part of our treatment?

Movement is always best, no matter what the issue.

The promotion of exercise is equally as important, particularly in pregnancy.

Exercise in pregnancy has been shown to reduce the rate of cesarian section births, appropriate weight gain as well as the management of gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes is one of the most common medical complications of pregnancy. Gestational Diabetes can occur in up to 20% of pregnancies and has since been rising. Gestational diabetes can cause harm to not only the mother but also the baby. You can have an increased risk of excessive birth weight, early births, breathing difficulties and even an increased risk of the baby developing Type 2 Diabetes later in life.

Exercise can be utilised as a tool to prevent preeclampsia as well as gestational diabetes.

Preeclampsia is a common medical complication in pregnancy. Women suffering from preeclampsia may have elevated blood pressure levels and high levels of protein in their urine which can indicate there may be damage to the function of the mother’s kidneys. If left untreated complications can be serious and even become fatal.

Not only does exercise demonstrate physical wellness it also helps with mental well-being. We all know that to be the best people we can be, we need to be able to be feeling well within ourselves. How does that saying always go, always put on your own oxygen mask first before helping others.

How can chiropractic care help with pregnancy?

Did you know that at least 50% of all pregnant women will experience back pain throughout their pregnancy and 50-75% of women will experience back pain during labour.

Pregnancy causes a lot of changes to our body. As pregnancy progresses further into the trimesters our bodies must change and adapt accordingly.

Throughout the stages of pregnancy our belly and uterus expand, changing the way our lower back is loaded. It creates a lot more stress on our lower back joints and muscles leading to things like lower back pain.

Our body releases hormones for your pelvis to expand to allow for the delivery of your baby. This creates a lot of changes to your biomechanics as well as how joints and soft tissue are loaded. Joints and muscular tissues become stretched and sometimes overstretched causing pelvic pain. Round ligament pain is also a common complaint of pregnancy. Your round ligament is a band of connective tissue which helps support our uterus. As the uterus expands more pressure is built up around these areas and can cause pain.

Physical examinations and testing can determine what the root cause is, and we can provide treatment accordingly, whether that be through specific soft tissue releases, dry needling, adjustments or even taping.

Pain in pregnancy is not always ‘normal’, there is no need to suffer through pain. You want to be able to give not only your body but also your mind to be in the best places to endeavour on your birthing experience.

Come get assessed and book your appointment today.

Workplace Healthy Habits

Workplace Healthy Habits

Calling on office workers that are guilty of being chained to their desk for long stretches of the day! Whilst meeting those deadlines and answering those calls, it is important to still instill healthy daily habits to prevent injury, muscle aches and poor posture.

We can encourage you to change your workplace to become ergonomically friendly, however changing your daily habits are the key to improving your overall health and wellbeing. Your daily habits often contribute to helping and preventing the pain and discomfort you may experience throughout the day. With that in mind, here are a few workplace habits you should adopt to support your ergonomically friendly office set up.

Set the alarm to deskercise

Having a desk-bound job is directly linked to a range of health issues like diabetes, heart conditions, mental health conditions, knee pain and back pain. Luckily, if you are chained to the desk, deskercises are a way to go to improve your overall fitness levels and heart health - read more about what deskercises from our previous blog.

Whilst deskercises don’t promise any Olympic medals or a six-pack, they do improve your strength and burn a few calories during your day. Try implementing one or two into your work day!

Only snacks allowed

Moving throughout the desk-bound day is one of the most effective methods to avoid soft tissue strains. For our physical and mental well being, don’t eat your lunch at the desk. Take advantage of the break to go outside, move around the house or do a yoga flow before the afternoon rush.

To further encourage movement every 20-30 minutes, refrain from using a bottle at the desk, rather use a glass as this will force you to get up and refill each time.

Avoid the hunch and focus on the crunch

Be mindful of your posture during your everyday tasks and whilst sitting at your desk! Having proper posture is essential for your spine health, leads to improvement in blood flow and maintains great support for your muscles, ligaments and tendons.

Adjusting your chair and treating yourself to regular breaks throughout your day to improve on the crunch times!

Have any questions about other healthy habits to be implemented into your work day, whether that be a desk job or not? Call us to book in your next session where we can assess your posture and provide individualised treatment plans. Book with Kinetic Healthcare online or give us a call on (02) 4666 2796.

Your number one fan

Your number one fan

With the sporting season up on us and already under way, it’s time to bring out the jersey and dust off our sneakers to get back into the rhythm of training.

Beside us at Kinetic Healthcare, did you know that your spine is your number one fan?

It is your body’s central support structure that allows you to remove freely and bend with flexibility. Your spine keeps you upright and connects the different parts of the skeleton to each other, like your head, chest, pelvis, shoulders, arms and legs.

Just like the undivided attention and support you provide to your favourite sports team, your spine deserves that same attention by implementing positive spinal and fitness habits.

Here are some tips that we recommend during the sporting season:

Posture

Pay attention to that posture of yours. Are you sitting with your shoulders back and relaxed? Or are you tilting your head forward, backwards or sideways? It may not feel natural at first, or comfortable, however if you keep practicing a strong posture, it becomes a great habit.

Having proper posture is essential for your spine health, as it improves your blood flow and allows you to maintain great support for your muscles, ligaments and tendons as a result of the strong alignment.

Stretching

Like we always encourage, choose stretching over stressing! As a form of physical exercise, you are targeting specific muscles and tendons to deliberately flex or stretch it to improve your flexibility.

Whilst stretching once today won’t magically give you the perfect flexibility, it does help you maintain and increase your range of motion in your joints. Stretching helps to avoid muscle damage and overall allows you to perform at your best.

Training

Many athletes might not continue their strength programs in season, often due to time restraints or worry of soreness and fatigue. Let’s say you take off three months from your resistance training for example. Unfortunately, you are at risk of losing that previous strength you were working on and decrease joint stability. This can lead to a higher chance of injury and we wouldn't want you to be in that vulnerable position.

We encourage you to continue your strength training but instead, incorporate deload weeks or decrease the weight to ensure you are actively recovering during the sporting season.

Who else is excited for the sporting season? If you have any questions or would like a tune during your season, book in with Kinetic Healthcare!

Debunking some more myths

Debunking some more myths

As part of our job, educating our clients is imperative. With the ultimate goal to get you back to doing what you love, injury and pain free, we provide you the information, tools and resources to reach those goals.

Part of this education is debunking common myths that surround our care, which can sometimes hinder one from seeking our care. Similar to a recent blog, read below some common myths that we have broken down for you.

Slipped discs that aren’t slipping

We commonly hear the issue of a slipped disc. Anatomically speaking, you physically cannot slip your discs. There are ligaments that run at the front part of your back and the back part of your spine that will prevent your discs and joints from slipping out of place.

What can actually happen is your discs can cause a leakage or a split which will lead to what we refer to as a herniation. This herniation can cause nerve pain, sciatica with referral down the leg and other back pain symptoms.

If you have been told by a healthcare professional that you have a ‘slipped disc’ in your back, then book an assessment with Kinetic Healthcare. We can thoroughly assess your pain to find the root cause of your pain.

You’re stuck for life

We are regularly asked if once patients start working with a chiropractor, they are stuck for life coming to the clinic. Well that is incorrect.

Our goal is to get you back to your LOVE. Get you back to moving and working without pain. Whilst we do apply some modifications in the interim of your rehabilitation journey, and it could take a couple sessions with us, we don’t expect you to be at our clinic every week for months on end.

We work alongside your doctors, specialists, PTs and coaches to get you back on track faster. The relation we build with your healthcare team will allow us to be on the same page and ensure one can work without the other.

We don’t get along with anyone but chiropractors

The ever so common myth that doctors and chiropractors don’t get along. Whilst this may be true for some, we appreciate the work and relations we have with our network of doctors.

We work closely with your team of healthcare professionals as well as refer you to a new contact. We have a strong network of contacts in the healthcare field, also including yoga and Pilates.

On a collaborative basis, we connect with your healthcare professionals to better understand their own assessments and conclusions, what they’re thinking and what suggestions they may have. Together, we create the ultimate team to get you back to doing what you love most.

You may have noticed a theme in these myths, to get you back to doing what you love most. That is what we truly want for each patient that walks through our clinic doors. Our team of expert chiropractors and remedial massage therapists have been receiving rave reviews with the residents of Narellan, Camden and Gregory Hills. So when are you booking in your assessment and getting back to your love?

The hybrid Chiropractic Method

Comment

The hybrid Chiropractic Method

If you have been injured or experienced ongoing aches and pains, the chances are that a family member or friend has suggested that you must go see ‘their person’ - the odds are high they’re talking about a chiro, physio or osteo.

With all three types commonly used for treating minor to major injuries, aches and pains, how is a patient to choose, or better yet understand, the differences between these ts and which is the best choice for their ailment?

What if we said that at Kinetic Healthcare, we provide what we refer to as ‘hybrid chiropractic’, where our treatment is a combination of these three methods.

To put it simply, chiropractors are mainly focused on the manipulation of the spine and musculoskeletal system, physiotherapists are essentially massage therapists providing rehabilitation exercise programs, and osteopaths, well we’re still trying to figure out what they do. Ha! All jokes aside, osteopath focus on how the skeleton, joints, muscles and internal organs function as a holistic unit and use a range of approaches to enhance function.

At Kinetic Healthcare, we provide a mixed modality of these three treatments. The ultimate outcome of this is that our patients are exposed to a multitude of treatments that can get them back to what they love most, pain or injury-free.

The combination of these treatment types provides the best possible opportunity for your body to respond, adapt and repair any musculoskeletal dysfunction.

When entering our clinic for the first time, our expert team of chiropractors and remedial massage therapists will take the time to thoroughly understand who you are, what your history is and where the root cause of the pain is. We provide an individualised plan and treatment strategy, tailored to the needs and conditions of you, our patient. We assess your condition every time you step into our clinic, hence why your treatment strategy will undoubtedly have interchangeable elements to ensure we are providing optimal care.

Let’s use the example of the most common complaint of pain we get in our clinic, the lower back . It can be a debilitating limitation that most of us know all too well. At each session at Kinetic Healthcare you will be assessed using passive and active movements, along with orthopedic and neurological examinations to understand the root cause of the pain.

Once we understand the pain and provide a diagnosis, we use a multitude of techniques to treat the issue. In the instance of back pain, we can use the Active Release Technique and soft tissue work to influence any areas restricting your function.

During our treatment, we will constantly monitor for improvements or other possible changes in presentation. With continued assessment, we can target the hidden symptoms or troubling areas to provide optimal treatment options.

Ultimately, ‘hybrid chiropractic’ will get you back doing what you love most, pain-free. We work with clients who have been disheartened when told they need to stop training or lift lighter weights. We don’t encourage you to stop all activity, rather we advocate to continue training and we’ll provide the modifications to alter your program until we improve your ailment.

If you are eager to know more about our ‘hybrid chiropractic’ approach and see why so many of patients living in Narellan and the surrounding suburbs in Gregory Hills and Camden are getting such great results; get in touch with us to book in an assessment.

How to start working out again when it’s been a while

How to start working out again when it’s been a while

If you have been hibernating during lockdown, the thought of how to start working out may be daunting for some. And whilst there is no way around it, don’t be deterred from sweating it out and getting back into your normal routines.

There are some things that we highly encourage when you are easing back into your workout routine. Whether you’ve had a break for a couple weeks, months or even years, it is important to keep the following in mind when getting back into the groove of things.

Planning

Before jumping straight into the deep end, let’s take time to plan out what your training routine would look like ideally, and what goals you wish to achieve. When creating a routine, you are able to develop those healthy habits and schedules that will keep you on track for reaching set goals.

We can plan alongside you, set measurable and realistic goals and ensure that you are staying on track in achieving these. We can provide the essential tools to maintain range of motion and reduce the risk of injury when easing back into the gym.

Beginner Exercises

It is important to establish from the beginning of your journey in easing back into the gym that we are starting from the basics. The basics will assure that we are performing all techniques and movements appropriately.

Spend some time building the  basics with compound movement, steady-state cardio and mobility work. Gradually, you can increase the volume or intensity as your body adapts to the routine. Feel free to combine your gym workouts with your at home workouts.

Active and Passive Rest Days

Recovery is the best part of being active, as we always say at Kinetic Healthcare, listen to your body when it whispers and not when it screams. Easing back into a workout routine does not entail a six-days-a-week routine. We would encourage you to schedule in rest days and allow your body active and passive rest days.

Active recovery implies when you are using non-strenuous physical activity to stay nimble and keep your body systems flowing. Alternatively, passive recovery is when you give your body a break with as little physical exertion as possible.

Healthy habits

Habits are essential to our health as they guide us in maintaining on track for our health goals. Forming habits like sticking to an eating plan or  exercising regularly will increase your quality of life and promote longevity.

To build habits when easing back into working out, we encourage you to have thought out your workout routine and ensure you are motivated and supported on your journey. Once you repeat this habit for a long time, it will automatically become part of your routine.

All in all, easing back into the gym is a lengthy process and should not be rushed.

Book in your next appointment with Kinetic Healthcare our expert team of chiropractors and remedial massage therapists are eagerly awaiting how we can guide you on with your goals.

Initially you didn’t believe chiropractic care was any good, but now you stand corrected

Too often, chiropractic care is still a shrouded mystery as there are misconceptions that perpetuate misinformation and downplay the benefit of chiropractic care. Patients often find our clinic as a result of a direct referral from a family member or friend, so it goes without saying that patients may feel anxious when entering our clinic, a little uncertain of what manual therapy is.

To add a little context, the word chiropractic is a combination of the two Greek words ‘cheir’ meaning to hand and ‘praktos’ meaning to done or done by hand. A very fitting name if you ask our very own Chris!

Chiropractic care focuses on your muscles, bones and joints. The care we provide in our clinic helps you to feel your best, as we work alongside you to prescribe a change in your lifestyle, exercises or provide chiropractic adjustments. The end goal is for you to get back on track and live your best life.

Things you should know about chiropractic care

Chiropractic care isn’t ‘new’

Chiropractic care dates back to ancient Egypt, however the first reported adjustment was performed in the late 1800s with a strong focus on massage and meridian therapies. Today, chiropractic care has evolved and adapted.

At Kinetic Healthcare, we provide a current and effective varied treatment approach that includes; movement assessment screens, manipulations, soft tissue releases, dry needling, bracing, taping and exercise prehabilitation and rehabilitation.

By assessing movement and function, our care will be a beneficial tool towards preventing further injuries and can enhance one’s athletic performance.

Consistency is key

Usually, patients will seek our care when they are in a lot of pain. Like most treatments, chiropractic treatments won’t cure your body in just one or two sessions. We treat each client that walks through our door individually, as we know that each body will have a different healing capacity.

Keeping in mind, we provide individualised rehabilitation programs and we encourage our clients to remain consistent in their exercises and movement to ensure we are on track with health goals.

Regular tune up sessions are always helpful when staying on track with your health goals. A check in is ideal to remain focused on the improvement of lifestyle and ensuring your body is working and moving as naturally as possible.

The safest of the healthcare professions

Chiropractic care is a safe healthcare method, and while you may experience some soreness after a session, there are no negative long term effects. Our clients leave the clinic pain free and with a feeling of instant rejuvenation.

Our care is often known to be safe due to its non-invasive, drug free remedies. For the majority of our patients, it is often they will obtain immediate relief after chiropractic treatment. There are few cases where patients will experience mild aching, stiffness or soreness however this should cease 24 hours post treatment.

Chiropractic care is an essential health service. Book in an assessment today. Our friendly and expert team of chiropractors and remedial massage therapist are eager to put in place an individualised rehabilitation plan to keep you on track with your health goals.

Kinetic Healthcare’s Lockdown Health Tips

Now more than ever, practicing self care is essential when it comes to taking care of our physical and mental well being during these lockdowns. Focusing on what makes us feel nourished will ease feelings of stress and anxiety that we may be experiencing at the moment.

We have five important health tips that we feel should be implemented to your routines.

Sleep routine

Maintain a healthy sleep routine, getting 7-9 hours of sleep every night. We encourage you to maintain your usual wake up and sleep times as best as possible to sustain your routine.

Breathing and Gratitude

When feeling down or stressed, or just having a bad day, practicing breathing and gratitude exercises are a powerful exercise to get you back on track. Each day, we encourage you to write down or say aloud 3 things that you are grateful for and practice mindful breathing with 30 deep breaths when you wake up.

Exercise

Each day, get some sunshine and move! We encourage at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. This can be a walk around the block, a gym session or following an online dance video. Whatever it is, do something that keeps you moving and gets you away from the desk and lets out energy.

Make a call the old fashioned way

There are myriad ways to effectively communicate these days however the old fashioned way still proves best. Pick up the phone and call your family and friends rather than texting them, take the time to have a conversation and get sucked into those lengthy calls catching up. Calls are a great excuse to get you walking about too, we have all been there on the phone and taking a stroll.

Random acts of kindness

Kindness promotes empathy and compassion. In these uncertain times, it is important that we practice kindness to release positivity into the current negative emotions we may be experiencing. We feel better and appreciative of the acts of kindness, which can encourage a ripple effect and call to others to do the same.

Chiropractic care is an essential health service. Book in an assessment today and we can put in place an individualised rehabilitation plan to keep you on track with your health goals.

Chiropractic care is still necessary even if you aren’t in pain

Chiropractic care is still necessary even if you aren’t in pain

It is quite common to think that you must be experiencing pain in order to be assessed by a chiropractor, however there is so much for chiropractic care then just pain relief. Chiropractic care can prevent misalignments from becoming major issues later down the track. Consider these benefits when seeking chiropractic care, even without pain.

Reducing stress

During these uncertain times of lockdown, stress factors can be heightened. Chiropractic adjustments and care will assist you with your body’s response to the repercussions of work, family and friends or other stresses. Chiropractic care can help to decrease muscle tension, improve circulation and promote relaxation.

Enhanced athletic performance

Regular chiropractic care not only addresses aches and pains, it will also enhance your athletic functionality with increased range of motion. Chiropractic care will help reduce inflammation, boost your immune system, reduce mental stress, enhance your pulmonary function, relieve tight muscles as well as increase your energy levels.

Reduce risk of injury

Undergoing regular treatment will treat misalignments and areas of tightness before the possibility of a full-blown injury. When participating in regular rehabilitation, your range of movement does improve and assist with reducing the risk of injury.

Better posture

It goes without saying that chiropractic care assists with improving your posture. Our previous blogs speak about tech neck, which describes a forward head position where your jaw is pushing a further 2-3 inches than it naturally should, adding pressure to the cervical joints. Adjustments will realign your natural posture as well as encourage you to become habitual to sit or stand with balanced posture.

Chiropractic care isn’t just for when you are sore and stressed. Book an assessment today and we can assess where you are at with your posture and range of movement and put in place an individualised plan to allow you to stay on track with your health goals.
